Dice N Monster
Overview
Dice N Monster is a procedurally generated action RPG developed as the final project for ICS 111. The game combines strategy and luck through its unique dice-based combat system, where players use three dice to determine damage against monsters.
The objective is to defeat as many monsters as possible while managing your hero's health. Players choose from three unique heroes, each with distinct attack, defense, and health stats. The game features procedurally generated maps for endless replayability.
Game Mechanics
- Hero Selection: Choose from three heroes with unique attributes
- Procedural Generation: Every playthrough features a randomly generated map
- Combat System: Dice-based damage calculation adds strategy and excitement
- Resource Management: Collect mana from defeated monsters to heal at temples
- Exploration: Discover monsters hidden in bushes throughout the map
My Contributions
As both artist and programmer, I was responsible for:
- Art & Design: Created 70% of monster designs using pixel art techniques
- Game Logic: Implemented damage indicators, score counter, and movement systems
- Combat System: Developed the dice mechanics and hero/monster balance
- Technical Challenges: Mastered sprite sheet implementation for dice animations
The most challenging aspects were implementing the dice system using sprite sheets and creating accurate damage indicators that displayed all combat information correctly on screen.
What I Learned
This project taught me pixel art design, advanced debugging techniques, and sprite sheet implementation. Collaborating with Chakhon reinforced the value of teamwork—we supported each other through challenges and achieved results we couldn't have accomplished alone.
The debugging process was particularly educational. Initial iterations didn't work as planned, but through persistence and collaborative problem-solving, we refined the game into a polished final product.
